Almost Forgot

So okay, we might've gone overboard with the cookies, but people got a kick out of it and they were delicious. We went all out with the programs this time and got them printed in color. It's going to be hard to go back to black and white...maybe we won't have to though.

Late Session

We are once again working late nights at school recording for more competitions. Last night, Kent was hit with a good amount of snow and wind. Even though the wind was pretty chilling, we did miss the snow a lot, so it was quite nice. The stage was a mess after we set up, but we had to add the walls because we couldn't really hear each other well.

a Fun Weekend

We had ourselves and nice recital on Saturday and if you were able to make it, thank you for coming.
Before the recital, we got some entertainment from Ivan.
Thanks to Jenny, we had a wonderful reception...too bad it had to run short. We had to run to the other side of campus for the orchestra dress rehearsal.

Charly had some new headshots taken.
Eric as well, although he probably won't use these.
Waiting for our friends to finish rehearsing so we can go eat.
He's the hall we perform in for orchestra.
And an accidental photo to finish it off. So next up is the Plowman Chamber Music Competition in March. We are currently working out the details on how we are going to get there. We are excited to be going along with the Aidan Quartet. Maybe a road trip?

Cold outside, hot inside

Last night, we kicked off our final week of preparations for our recital coming up on Saturday. We are beginning to feel all of our hard work coming together, but still have quite a bit to do. Unfortunately, we are forced to work late hours because lack of hall times, but still enjoying the practice nonetheless.

There's no sign that the snow is letting up. After rehearsal, the ground was once again covered with fluff and plow trucks are roaming the city streets.

The Banff Audition

We got to Cleveland Institute of Music about 15 minutes late. Sometimes you just can't trust a GPS. We were cutting through the city at a snail pace and getting stuck at every signal. When we drove up to the audition location, we kicked Charly our of the car before parking so that he could tell whoever in charge that we were on our way. Luckily, they were running quite a bit behind schedule, so we were able to get settled inside. We didn't get a chance to warm up, but we performed really well under the hurried circumstances. Barry Shiffman from the St. Lawrence String Quartet was there to hear our 10 minute performance of movements from Debussy and Bartok 4 string quartets. The room was tiny and he sat about 2 feet from us but seemed to be enjoying himself especially when Charly played an awesome solo in the Bartok.

Afterwards, we just had to go out and take some photos in the freezing cold. Andrea agreed to take off her jacket while the guys just stood there warm as can be. She even has heels on that barely cover her feet, but you would never know that she is frozen solid. We found a nice open area downtown and shot several angles.

Keep it Coming

Snow is up to our knees this week and it's been hard getting around, but definitely worth it. Everything is beautifully covered and while it's been difficult getting around the slippery ice, we are enjoying every minute of winter here.

Last night, Andrea broke an E-string and we took a brief pause from rehearsal, but when we started up again Charly broke an A-string and he didn't have a spare so we had to stop. Too bad that the cheapest cello strings are still around 40 bucks compared to under 5 bucks for an E-string.

We had a full day lined up with lessons, coachings, orchestra, and history class, but the weather canceled some of that so we went out to eat Thai food with one of our coaches at KSU, Ivan and Daniel's girlfriend Jenny. The portions were gigantic, but it was okay because we ended up staying for over three hours. It is nice having a decent asian restaurant around the area. On Friday, we are off to Cleveland for our Banff audition and we look forward to it.

New Posters

We have 3 posters for our upcoming recital on the 2oth. Here the formal one....
It took 3 flashes to capture the snow in action for this poster.
Got a little wet for this one...Hopefully we'll get them posted in good locations around the area.

There was quite a bit of snow today and classes were canceled. We got out of school as soon as we heard so we wouldn't get stuck in the ice again. When we got back home, we had a little fight...Charly and Eric got hit the hardest...We ambushed Andrea when she got back from school...we had a nice time being outside, but it was nicer being inside. If school gets canceled again...maybe we'll go sledding.

Snow Day

We are constantly kept busy with all of these auditions and performances coming up. We are enormously excited to be the quartet in residence at Aspen Music Festival. Starting in June, we will be there studying with the many amazing quartets for 9 weeks. We are driving up to Cleveland this week to audition for the Banff Center in Canada and we have our recital coming on the the 20th of this month. We have a great program with some Haydn, Webern, and Bartok.

The other day, we got blanketed with a few feet of snow and thought it would be useful for some new photographs. Good thing the camera equipment is water resistant because everything including ourselves were soaked in the end. That's Charly kicking a huge snowball and also hitting a pyramid sculpture that Eric made.

New York is Awesome

We had such a great time in New York. We had several flight delays getting there with all of the wind and rain, but as soon as we arrived, it was gorgeously sunny for the rest of the trip. We got hooked up with a place to rehearse at the Mannes school to prepare for our Aspen Music Festival audition. It's a very homey, petit building, and it really reminded us of the old Conservatory of Music building in SF. We kept seeing familiar faces, but we were too afraid to say hi, just in case they were really strangers.

Since half of our quartet is Korean, we had to get to Koreatown to eat some Seoul food. We ordered at least half the menu at all the places we went but for some reason didn't get full enough. Right before our audition we went to an Indian buffet, which might've not been such a good idea, but definitely worth it.

The audition took place at Nola Studios and we had a 30 minute slot to perform for the legendary Earl Carlyss. We talked most of the time about our backgrounds and future goals. We had some ups and down in our playing, but got through it all alright. We're not sure, but after we played a movement from Haydn, some of us hear him say either "terrific" or "perfect."

After our stressful afternoon, we got some bows rehaired, took some pictures, and then absolutely had to get more Korean food. Still didn't get full though. We met up with some SF friends and had a blast all night long. Now we are back at Kent and waiting to hear from the Aspen festival with our fingers crossed.
